Welcome to the Birchwood Primary School Website, we are proud to be an Eco-School

Welcome to our School Council area

The School Council was set up in 2005 so that if anything was wrong with our school we could discuss ideas and hopefully make it better. Each class talks about any concerns that they would like their members to bring to our meetings, here they are discussed, then we vote for our 'Big Question.' This is revealed at whole school assembly on the following Monday morning, then talked about in the classroom.

The School Council is made up of children from each year group and we meet every two weeks on a Thursday at 1:00pm. We hold elections in our classes at the start of the school year and vote for our School Council class members. The School Council wear blue crest badges with the lettering 'School Council,' the members photographs can be seen on our notice board and in their classrooms.

I would like to say a huge thank you to last years school council, who have worked extremly hard. In the last week of term we visited Woodbridge Primary School to look at their bike shelters made from sustainable materials. We hope in the near future to have shelters in the playground for our bikes.

Bike Shelter Update

Our sustainable bike shelter project will soon be complete. We are hoping to have an official opening after the half term holiday.

Take care to park your bike somewhere safe whilst the work is carried out.

Plans can be seen on the school council noticeboard, the school PTA are busy raising money to help towards the cost,

please support them.

School Council selling cakes at this years fund raiser for 'Children in Need.'

Thank you to everyone, we raised an amazing £150.

The Blue Peter Bring- and- Buy sale was another huge success,

raising £114 for starving children all over the world

We regularly invite governors to our school council meetings, last term we invited Mrs Wainer our early Years teacher who is also acting deputy head. Mrs Wainer enjoyed the meeting where the children spoke clearly about their concerns within school, Mrs Wainer commented after the meeting that "the council are a true representation of the student voice."

What is Eco-Schools all about?
We are proud to be a part of the Eco-Schools project, a programme designed to help reduce the environmental impact of the school on the community whilst encouraging our students to take responsibility for the future of their own environment. We are committed to the involvement of our students throughout the entire programme including the planning, monitoring, and decision-making. The Eco-Schools project offers three award levels (Bronze, Silver and Green Flag). Through the ongoing hard work of our students and staff, Birchwood Primary School has been awarded the Bronze and silver certificates and have just recieved the GREEN FLAG.
Have you visited our very own Eco-Schools website? try this link and please leave us a comment.

We are currently thinking about building a new habitat area in the woods, all your ideas and suggestions would be welcome.

Please speak to your Wildlife committee representatives.

The waste audit was a huge success,  we recycled 80% of our waste including compost. On 14.01.08 we recieved a gold award from Suffolk Council for our achievements. WOW!!

Mrs Fairhurst has done a fantastic job with volunteers from different year groups collecting litter from the school grounds this year and we would all like to say a big thank you.

Please try and remember every piece of rubbish has an owner, put your rubbish in the bin!

Our 'Bolton' paper recycle bin has arrived and can be found in the carpark, the school recieves money for recycling this paper so please bring in all your old papers and magazines. The new blue recycling bins for plastic and cardboard can be found in your classrooms. We are still collecting used postage stamps, old mobile phones, and computer print cartridges so please keep collecting during the holidays.

Check out this website for some fun recycling games. www.recyclenow.com/compost
